The northern and southern sections of Nigeria can be regarded parts of western Sudan and the Guinea Coast, respectively; but, because to the abundance of evidence for a 2,000-year artistic history, it is more convenient to treat Nigeria independently. The ceramic art of the Nok civilization, which thrived in northern Nigeria from the 5th century BCE to the early centuries CE, is the first known large-scale sculpture in the Sudan. These people were the first known iron producers in western Africa, with furnaces dating from the 5th to early 3rd centuries BCE in Taruga; yet, they continued to utilize stone tools. Their sculptures are made of well-fired clay and depict animals in a lifelike manner. People living in the Niger and Benue basins, the hilly areas of the Jos Plateau in the center of the area, and Adamawa to the east have a wide range of sculptural traditions. This is a region with a staggering amount of diversity. The Igala, the Idoma, the Afo, the Tiv, and the Jukun, all from the Benue valley, have some of the more well-known traditions.
