Tyr Graig Castle is a unique Victorian building located about 1/2 mile from the popular seaside town of Barmouth. Originally built in 1892 by famous gunmaker W W Greener as a summer house it resembles both a castle and a double-barrelled shotgun when viewed from the top. Following the First World War Greener erected the stack of stones that stand on the highest peak visible from Barmouth on which he placed a plaque commemorating all those Birmingham people that gave their lives to the country. This plaque is still there to this day.
During the Second World War, due to similarities of Cardigan Bay to the beaches of Normandy, many practice manoeuvres were carried out in the area and due to this, Tyr Graig was commissioned by the army and used as a quarter masters stores. As it was necessary to constantly check the contents of each locked room, a time and efficiency-aware commander deemed it necessary to cut a 1-inch peephole in each of the doors. These holes can still be seen in the original doors around the hotel. Much of the original features have been sympathetically retained to this day.
